There are Only Beginners
Robert Thompson

“There are no masters here, only students.” This is something one of my teachers once said to me after I had addressed him incorrectly. He said this after first looking around the room as if some otherworldly Tai-Chi master had suddenly entered. Yes, he was a funny character. He was also teaching me something.

One of the things I love so much about Tai-Chi is its pleasant and welcome accessibility. The things we learn on the first day are the same things we will be practicing on the last day. There are no advanced classes, only beginner classes forever.

It kind of takes the pressure off. Allows us as students to simply focus on what we’re doing, and that, in essence is what Tai-Chi practice is all about.
It’s a brand new year, and we’re about to start a round of “Introduction to Tai-Chi classes at Cloudhands” (plug!), an eight week series designed for the ‘beginning Tai-Chi’ student. And yes, it’s a great way for someone new to the practice, or who just wants to give Tai-Chi a try, to do just that. Still, every time I mention it I keep expecting my old teacher to tap me on the shoulder and ask how I can tell the beginning class form the rest of them.

I can tell because the beginning class is still trying to practice.

Black Dragon Serves Tea

This exercise is a central 'linking ' exercise in the Chinese martial art of Ba Gua Zhang. The movements are easy to learn yet can be performed with many variations that keep it fun and useful for people of different abilities and backgrounds. The body coils and twists like a soaring dragon developing flexibility and strength in the whole body particularly the waist and spine where core power is developed.

Practiced slowly the exercise is meditative like Yoga or Tai Chi and when sped up it has an enjoyable dancelike character.
